Egypt's army has cleared a mosque where Islamist backers of the deposed President have been holed up, deepening the country's crisis.

Egyptian security forces have attempted to storm a mosque where hundreds of supporters of deposed President Mohamed Morsi are refusing to leave. Europe correspondent Brett Mason reports from Cairo.

Egypt's Islamists have called for a "Friday of Anger" in Cairo in relatiation for the bloody crackdown by security forces that has claimed almost 600 lives.

Despite calls from the international community for restraint on both sides, the defiance from Islamist leaders raises fresh fears of more violence.
