SBS senior correspondent Brian Thomson is in Burma, covering the beginning of the country's new political era since the release of Aung San Suu Kyi.

Foreign Minister Bob Carr has announced that Australia will lift its sanctions on Burma, after the military junta released pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and held elections in which she won a seat in parliament.

Foreign Minister Bob Carr arrives in Burma and meets with recently-freed pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi at the lakeside home that served as her prison for almost two decades.

He also toured the military-ruled country's old capital, Rangoon.
