One man has died and four other people are being treated in hospital, after a freak wave overturned a fishing boat near Exmouth off the northern West Australian coast.

Around 9.20am (WST), Exmouth police were called after reports a vessel with five people on board had overturned in the ocean off the Bundegie Boat Ramp, WA police said.

One man, a 47-year-old, has been confirmed dead and three other people - a man, a woman and their seven-year-old son - are being flown by the Royal Flying Doctor Service to Perth for treatment.

Another man will remain in Exmouth hospital for treatment to minor injuries.

Police said another nearby boat came to the assistance of the people in the overturned vessel and ferried them to Exmouth.

The overturned boat is currently being towed back to Exmouth.
