One dead in Mormon church shooting in US

A man has walked into a Mormon church in the US and opened fire, killing one person and injuring another, with police saying it was a targeted attack.

One person died and another was injured when a man walked into a Mormon church in the US state of Nevada and opened fire in what police say was a targeted attack.

Fallon Police Chief Kevin Gehman says John Kelley O'Connor, 48, walked into the church on Sunday, which had about 50 people inside at the time, and fired a gun before walking home where he reportedly surrendered to police.

Gehman said O'Connor appeared to have targeted one person and not the church with no motive immediately known.

TV station KOLO reports that O'Connor surrendered after authorities called his home and asked.

Fallon is about 96 kilometres east of Reno.
