A bushfire that destroyed a house in Victoria's southwest has been controlled.

The fire broke out at Wensleydale, in the Otways Ranges, about 3pm on Monday and burned 10 hectares of bush before it was controlled in the evening, a Country Fire Authority spokeswoman said.

Fallen trees in the area made roads impassible, forcing fire crews to walk to the scene to search for survivors at the house, but the occupants were not home at the time.

The fire is still burning within containment lines.

Fire crews will remain on the scene overnight and on Tuesday as high winds and temperatures well into the 30s hit Victoria.

"We're a little concerned about the weather conditions tomorrow and the potential for a flare-up again," the spokeswoman said.

At its height, two firefighting aircraft, more than 100 firefighters and 28 fire trucks were sent to fight the fire.
