One Nation's rise in WA a boon for Labor

A latest Newspoll for WA shows support for Pauline Hanson has rapidly increased across the state, spelling trouble for the incumbent Liberal government.

Support for Pauline Hanson's One Nation is soaring across Western Australia ahead of next month's state elections, a new poll shows.

The latest Newspoll published in the Australian on Friday shows the rapid re-emergence of One Nation could hinder Premier Colin Barnett's attempt to win a third term on March 11 and help Labor win government.

The result will increase pressure on Mr Barnett, the nation's longest-serving leader, to negotiate a preference-swap deal with One Nation, which could be his only chance of hanging on to power.

With the campaign officially beginning this week, the Labor Party has increased its election-winning lead over the Liberal-National government by 54 per cent to 46 per cent in two-party preferred terms.

This would deliver the party 14 more seats at the election and make Mark McGowan premier.

The Liberal Party's primary vote has slumped to just 30 per cent -- its worst result in the Barnett era. Labor's primary vote also slipped, from 41 per cent to 38 per cent.

But One Nation's share of the statewide primary vote soared from three per cent to 13 per cent.

Mr Barnett questioned the accuracy of polls but has already conceded this week the Labor party are in front.

"We know that," he told reporters.

"We're still only day two of a five week campaign so there's a long way to go but it's still comparatively close."

Mr McGowan said he was focused on policies and plans, not polls.

"Polls come and go. You don't ever take anything for granted," he told reporters.

"It's a long way to the election. A lot of things will happen in the meantime. The government will throw the kitchen sink at it."
