One Tasmanian fire still at alert level

A fire in remote central Tasmania remains the focus of authorities, but no longer poses an immediate threat.

Just one bushfire in central Tasmania continues to attract a community alert after authorities downgraded another blaze overnight.

The five-day fire near Osterley in the state's Midlands has burnt through more than 2600 hectares, but no longer poses an immediate threat, the Tasmania Fire Service reports.

"There may be smoke visible, and ash and embers falling in the area," the service's website said.

The fire should be controlled within coming days, acting chief Gavin Freeman says.

On the east coast near Orford, a fire that had burnt for more than four days was contained late on Wednesday.

"Control lines have been established and will be consolidated in the next few days," the service said.

Close to Tea Tree, north of Hobart, crews are closing in on a fire that threatened homes on Tuesday.

Although yet to be controlled, the blaze is no longer considered a danger and there is only one tanker on the fire ground.

Total fire bans were in place for much of Tasmania on Saturday, when most of the fires started, and again on Tuesday, amid hot and windy conditions.

Since Saturday, more than 70 bushfires have been identified.

On Thursday, crews continued to attend and monitor 23 fires.

The cause of each blaze will be investigated.

Mr Freeman said many of the fires that started on Saturday were caused by a flare-up of smouldering patches left over from burn-offs by private landowners.
