Sydneysiders took to Twitter and Facebook to have their say about a disgruntled father who caused morning peak hour chaos by climbing the Harbour Bridge's arch.

Michael Fox brought parts of Sydney's transport network to a standstill on Friday, with all bridge road traffic and some morning trains shut down for more than two hours from 5am (AEST).

Angry commuters promptly vented their frustrations on social media sites, criticising authorities' handling of the situation.

"I find it astonishing that one man can effectively bring an entire city to a standstill so easily," twitter user jayamyler wrote.

"Unjustified & selfish actions at harbourbridge 2day, opportunity cost high. Public servants can't manage disruptions either - utter fail," wrote another.

The protest also caused some to question how the apparent breach in Sydney's security system occurred.

"This bridge business raises big security concerns - how can a national icon be shut down by just one well-trained guy," wrote Col Baldwin.

"Will the NSW Govt (be) refunding taxpayers for 10 yrs worth of security guards' salaries after the exhibition of incompetence today?" another twitter user asked. While at the top of the bridge, Fox - who identified himself as a former SAS officer - held the banners "PLZ HELP MY KIDS" and "KIDS FIRST".

The 38-year-old told media outlets he was protesting over the failure of authorities to protect children when parents separated.

"It's actually very sad that a man has to resort to such extreme lengths ... to express his utter frustration for the system, which has intentionally or unintentionally ruined family relations & have become contributors to all sorts of psychopathological problems for parents & children," one Facebook user said.

"Parental alienation is real. Just ask those fathers who experience it every day," wrote twitter user duds.
