A new taskforce between Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the NSW police will target online predators who prey on infants, including newborns.

The newly formed Joint Anti-Child Exploitation Team, known as Jacet, will boost national efforts to stamp out child sex abuse.

"The internet has given predators the ability to share child exploitation material and groom children across the world," NSW State Crime Commander, Assistant Commissioner Mark Jenkins said on Wednesday.

In NSW, the most common child trafficking-related offences relate to perpetrators using online services, including pay-per-view, to tune into child exploitation material produced in other countries.

Others act as distributors, using their international connections to procure material and send it on.

A smaller percentage of offenders in the state produce their own material for distribution.

National High Tech Crime Operations Commander David McLean said online child sex abuse is insidious.

"The ages of the children vary from newborn infants through to young adults," he said.

"We've seen instances ... where people are arranging to offend (against) children that have yet to be born."

"Age is no barrier to the predilections of some of these offenders."

A memorandum of understanding was signed in Sydney by the two agencies to streamline intelligence sharing.

"We need to make sure that we can rapidly share intelligence that we get from our overseas partners between the federal police and state and territory police forces," said federal Minister for Justice Michael Keenan.
