Participants in the London Olympics opening ceremony have been given a stern warning by the event's artistic director: Save the surprise.

As dress rehearsals swing into action for London's Olympic Games opening ceremony, participants have been issued a stern warning not to spoil the show by giving away key details.

Artistic director Danny Boyle anticipated a wave of unauthorised social media coverage ahead of the big event with an apparent attempt to gazump it.

The Twitter hashtag #savethesurprise was projected on screens inside London's Olympic Stadium during rehearsals, and quickly became a trending topic on the social media site.

Many participants appear to have embraced the concept, but it hasn't stopped rumours and images supposedly of rehearsals appearing online.

Former England captain David Beckham has confirmed he will play a role in the celebrations, but stopped short of giving any more details.

Others have speculated over the inclusion of British icons such as Harry Potter, cricket, English villages and The Beatles, although nothing official has been confirmed.
