Opposition Leader Bill Shorten, who's described IS as a barbaric organisation, says in a statement Australia doesn't enter into such conflicts lightly.

However, he says Australia has a role to play in eradicating the evil group and the opposition has been reassured Australian support is being provided at the request of, and in full co-ordination with, the Iraqi Government.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced Australia will send 600 military personnel to the United Arab Emirates at the request from the US government to contribute forces to possible military action in Iraq.
