Prime Minister Julia Gillard says the opposition will make widespread cuts to programs for Indigenous Australians if it takes power.

On a trip to Darwin on Friday the PM said the Opposition wants to cut a range of programs that impact on indigenous people.

"It has become clear and has not been denied by the Opposition that they are planning deep cuts to programs that support indigenous Australians," Ms Gillard told reporters.

"Clearly the Opposition has a plan for deep cuts right across the board - health, education, programs that support Indigenous Australians, as well as a plan for tax increases," Ms Gillard said.

She was responding to recent comments from Opposition indigenous affairs spokesman Nigel Scullion.

"We believe the arrangement that is in place now is the right arrangement and so we are opposed to this cutback," Ms Gillard said.

Later Mr Scullion hit back, saying the Opposition had no plans to cut all indigenous programs.

"Most Aboriginal and Islander people around Australia would know that is absolute nonsense," Mr Scullion said.
