Origin footy fever hits parliament

Parliamentarians of all political persuasions are showing their team colours in the lead up to the first State of Origin match of the season.

Federal politicians are declaring their allegiance as rugby league fever breaks out ahead of the first State of Origin match.

"Today is, of course, a very important day on the Queensland calendar, this is the beginning of the State of Origin series where NSW turns up for their ritual humiliation," said Queensland Labor senator Murray Watt.

He's adamant the Maroons will dominate even without the inclusion of injured star Jonathan Thurston.

"Absolutely, I talked to my son about it this morning. He wasn't particularly confident but I reminded him we've 10 out of the last 11 series," Senator Watt told reporters in Canberra on Wednesday.

Fellow Queenslander, cabinet minister Matt Canavan, fronted reporters after being on the losing end of a 'pollies versus press' match at Parliament House.

"I missed a few right in front of goal. Hopefully, the Maroons don't do the same tonight," he said.

But there's always a political point to be scored.

"It's great to see all of Queensland united, not just behind our football team tonight but all major political parties in Queensland right now are on board with the Carmichael Adani mine," Senator Canavan said.
