Oscars stuff-up the audience favourite

There was swearing, lots of swearing, as "La La Land" was mistakenly announced as the winner of the Best Picture award in place of "Moonlight".

It was the moment of the century, or at least, it was the moment of the century judging by Twitter's reaction.

After Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway incorrectly announced "La La Land" as Best Picture at the Oscars, audible gasps and confusion ensued IRL ("Moonlight" was of course the real winner).

But nowhere was the shock more acute than online, as a torrent of "What the actuals" began to flood beloved echo chamber Twitter.

Despite being light years away, many Australians also found the news difficult to comprehend.

And it wasn't long until parrallels were being drawn between some other big upsets of the century.

Fortunately for Nicole Kidman, the faux pas proved the perfect distraction from what potentially could have been the most confusing moment of the evening, were it not for Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway.
