Former omnium world champion Glenn O'Shea is poised to claim another medal in the multi-race event with three disciplines remaining at the track cycling world championships in Paris.

The Australian, who won the event in 2012, started badly on Friday (Saturday morning AEDT) with a poor scratch race, but bounced back by winning the individual pursuit with a time of 4 minutes 20.807 seconds.

O'Shea then finished the night off by coming fourth in the elimination race.

The 25-year-old Victorian currently sits in sixth place overall on 86 points with the time trial, flying lap and all-important points race to come on Saturday (Sunday morning AEDT).

Young Colombian sprint sensation Fernando Gaviria is leading the men's omnium after day one at France's new national velodrome.

Gaviria secured top three finishes in the scratch race, individual pursuit and elimination race to end the day top of the six-discipline event with 110 points.

Italian professional sprinter Elia Viviani is second on 102 after winning the scratch and elimination races but coming only 10th in the pursuit.

Reigning world champion Thomas Boudat of France is third on 94.
