Outcomes from the Aust-ASEAN Summit

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has characterised Australia as an "all weather friend" to ASEAN and talked up the prospects for greater economic ties.

OUTCOMES FROM THE AUSTRALIA-ASEAN SPECIAL SUMMIT:

* Australia to provide technical assistance to help ASEAN countries develop best practice counterterrorism laws.

* More regional counter terrorism talks planned.

* Training for ASEAN police to uncover terror plots with technology and use electronic evidence for prosecutions.

* Foreign fighter workshops for border security officials.

* $30 million investment to support "smart cities". Training in sustainable urban planning ideas.

* Infrastructure cooperation initiative to develop a pipeline of projects to attract public and private investment.

* Australian Treasury to do workshops with ASEAN counterparts on topics such as tax, regulation reform and budget policy.

* A scholarship for an Australian undergraduate student to study in an ASEAN country as part of the New Colombo Plan.

* 50 new scholarships for ASEAN post graduates students to study in Australia.

* Scholarships for emerging defence and security leaders from Australia and ASEAN countries

* Boosting the number of epidemiologists in the region to help better deal with disease outbreaks

* More talks on areas of peacekeeping, protection of human rights and promotion of gender equality
