Outlook upbeat as job ads hit 6-year-high

The number of job advertisements in Australia have hit their highest mark since 2011, after rising again in November, according to the latest ANZ job ads data.

The number of jobs being advertised in Australia rose in November to a six-year high, with the labour market picking up across all states.

ANZ's latest survey of job ads showed the number of positions advertised rose 1.5 per cent on a seasonally adjusted basis to 172,395 - the highest since November 2011.

The number of jobs advertised was 12.1 per cent higher than a year earlier.

CommSec chief economist Craig James observed that only one of the last six months has failed to show a rise in job ads.

"The good news is that more people are employed, potentially adding more people with money to spend in the shopping malls around the country," Mr James said.

Mr James said that the Reserve Bank of Australia has "plenty of reasons" to be more upbeat when board members meet on Tuesday to decide the cash rate.

But the central bank is nearly certain to held the rate at 1.5 per cent, where it has sat since August 2016.

"With inflation under control, rates are going nowhere," Mr James said.

ANZ head of Australian economics David Plank said, while the improved labour market has not yet translated into higher wages growth, the survey suggests both a positive outlook for employment and further "solid prospects" for economic growth.
