There has been outrage online after pictures emerged of a White House Halloween event where children were reportedly encouraged to create an anti-immigrant mural.

Large letters reading “Build the Wall” - a reference to the United States President Donald Trump’s controversial US-Mexico border wall - can be seen in pictures of the mural.

Each “brick” in the wall is a piece of paper bearing the names of the children invited to the event, according to Yahoo News.

Other photos from the event appear to show child-sized construction vests and hardhats hanging next to a “Trump’s Crew” sign.
The event was held on 25 October in the White House’s Eisenhower Executive Office Building, which is located near the offices of the vice president and a large number of other staff.

Vice President Mike Pence was present in the building at the time, but a spokesperson for him said he did not go beyond his office, which is on a different floor to where the mural was created.

“Our ceremonial office had a plane display,” the spokesperson told Yahoo News.

“We had kids build their own paper airplanes and fly them. That’s what the VP came to. He came to our ceremonial office.”

Mr Trump’s proposed US-Mexico border wall was a key pillar of his successful 2016 presidential campaign.

He has faced repeated opposition to the wall since the election, most notably for its projected cost and anti-immigrant sentiment.
