South Australia will receive $72 million of federal funding to overhaul the state's notorious Port Wakefield Road, a major highway linking Adelaide to the Northern Territory.

The federal and state governments will work together to deliver the $90 million project, which involves duplicating the road at Port Wakefield and building an overpass for the Augusta Highway.

"When it comes to ensuring that we have better, safer roads, the Commonwealth government is committed to doing just that," Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack told reporters on Thursday.

The announcement follows a plea from South Australia's peak motoring group to increase road infrastructure spending in next week's state budget.

In a pre-budget submission, the Royal Automobile Association called for a $500 million boost for SA roads to improve safety.

"By ploughing money into upgrading key roads ... we can cut road deaths and injuries," road safety manager Charles Mountain said on Thursday.

Tuesday's budget will be the first for the new Liberal state government since the March election, with Treasurer Rob Lucas also vowing not to spend any money promoting it on commercial television or radio.

This is a direct response to Labor's advertising spend of $2.9 million for the promotion of their 2017/18 budget, Mr Lucas said.

"That sort of money could employ another 15 nurses or teachers for a year, or pay for four years of an extended women's domestic violence crisis hotline, which is what we've committed to," he said.

Next week's budget will also include $18.5 million to deliver more carparks at two bus interchange locations in Adelaide's northeast, which Transport Minister Stepan Knoll said delivered on a key election pledge.

The South Australian Council of Social Service, meanwhile, will be hoping the state government delivers on a number of key promises next week, including $100 million in subsidies for household energy storage.
