All Black Owen Franks has signed to stay with New Zealand Rugby until the 2019 World Cup, which will probably see him become the country's most capped prop.

Franks, 28, has played 90 Tests, behind Tony Woodcock's 103-Test propping record, and will continue to add to his 123 matches for the Crusaders.

"Whilst there was considerable interest internationally, I felt I wasn't ready to give up playing with the best players in the game," Franks said on Thursday.

"I also believe that I haven't reached my full potential yet and don't want to leave until I feel I have."

He also noted NZR and the Crusaders had come up with a competitive offer to keep him.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen says Franks is one of the best in the world in his position.

"His formidable work ethic, commitment to the team's values and outstanding play make him one of the most respected players in our team and we're very happy that he has decided to stay."

He was the third youngest prop to be selected for the All Blacks when he made his debut in 2009.

Since then he has missed just 15 Tests in seven seasons.

Franks has some way to go to beat the world propping record for Tests, held by Gethin Jenkins who played 134 times for Wales and the British Lions.
