Pacific focus for NZ-Aust defence ties

Australia and New Zealand defence ministers have met in Wellington to discuss closer defence relations.

Australia and New Zealand are beefing up defence ties particularly in the Pacific region.

Defence ministers from both countries met in Wellington on Friday.

They discussed efforts to deliver aid to earthquake-hit parts of Papua New Guinea and security assistance to help the country host the APEC leaders summit later this year.

Defence Minister Marise Payne and her NZ counterpart Ron Mark said both militaries will also team up more to boost maritime security across the South Pacific.

The pair also discussed a joint training mission of Iraqi soldiers.

New Zealand and Australian soldiers have trained more than 30,000 Iraqi troops in the fight against Islamic State militants since 2015.

More than 300 Australian and 100 New Zealand military personnel are deployed at any one time at the Taji base, north of Baghdad.

The Ardern government has flagged it will review the training mission in November.
