Media analyst Stephen Mayne has told SBS he's shocked that James Packer is likely the man behind the 'raid' on Network Ten, as he has in the past criticised free to air TV.
Although the deal has not been confirmed, Packer is itching to get back, he says, and he's done it at the right time.
'He 's yearning to be a player again', Mayne said.
Advertising is doing well, and the future for free to air is rosy, he added - so it makes a lot of sense.
With his Crown casino interests, Packer is a man who is bored of being a 'casino mogul' , Mayne said.
