Fast bowler Trent Boult and debutant spinner Ajaz Patel have raised New Zealand hopes of containing Pakistan's first-innings lead on Saturday's second day of the first Test.
Boult (3-52) broke two half-century partnerships either side of lunch in Abu Dhabi and Patel (2-64) took two quick wickets after the break as Pakistan reached 8-225 at tea.
Pakistan led by 72 runs after New Zealand were bowled out in their first innings for 153, losing their last seven wickets for 42 runs on day one.
Babar Azam was the only batsman to complete a half-century and was unbeaten on 60 off 101 balls with five fours, along with No.10 batsman Hasan Ali on four not out.
Neil Wagner (1-30) was also rewarded for his steady bowling as the left-arm seamer had Yasir Shah (9) caught behind just before tea for his 150th Test wicket.
Pakistan batsmen struggled against Boult's swing and some tight bowling by Patel, the left-arm spinner. Boult broke the 83-run fourth-wicket stand between Asad Shafiq (43) and Azam when he uprooted Shafiq's off stump after lunch.
Patel lured Pakistan skipper Sarfraz Ahmed (2) into his favourite sweep shot and had him caught at backward square leg before wicketkeeper BJ Watling stumped Bilal Asif (10).
Earlier, Pakistan lost both overnight batsmen, Haris Sohail (38) and Azhar Ali (22), on 91 inside the first hour after resuming on 2-59.
