At least 16 people have died in Karachi by electrocution or collapsing walls, as Pakistan’s most populous city is the latest to be hit by the floodwaters sweeping across the sub-continent.

With more torrential rain predicted in the next three days, local residents have been frustrated by the government response.

“The situation is out of control, there is water everywhere. People are wading in waist-high water, vehicles have broken down and the traffic has gone nuts,” said Gulab Maira.

“There seems to be no end to our misery.“

Worst floods in 20 years

With two-thirds of the country underwater, Bangladesh has been hit with the worst floods in 20 years.

More than half a million houses have been destroyed, and the government and aid agencies are providing food assistance to almost three million people.

“A large volume of people who are currently living outside their houses and are in desperate need of food and water and other medical assistance,” said World Vision’s Operations director, Jared Berends.

Humanitarian agencies have also warned that the region is facing a possible cholera outbreak.
