The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has banned Pakistani Test umpire Asad Rauf for five years over his alleged involvement in a spot-fixing scam during the 2013 Indian Premier League.

The BCCI says in a statement on Friday that Rauf has been "banned from being associated with the activities of the board and its affiliates."

Rauf was investigated after police found an unclaimed gift hamper containing gold ornaments and electronic appliances at the New Delhi airport addressed to him.

Rauf, who denies the charges, did not appear before the committee but sent in a submission.

That year's scam led to Test cricketer Shantakumaran Sreesanth and two other players being banned for life, and the Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals being suspended in 2016 and 2017.

Rauf made his first international appearance as an umpire in 2000 and was included on the Elite Panel in 2006 and went on to officiate in 49 Tests, 98 ODIs and 23 T2o internationals.
