Palaszczuk mourns late Qld trade unionist

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has paid tribute to trade unionist and wrestler Hughie Williams, who died on Sunday.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has paid tribute to former trade unionist and wrestling champion Hughie Williams, who died on Sunday aged 84.

Mr Williams represented Australia as a wrestler at the 1964 Olympics

He went on to serve as Queensland state secretary for the Transport Workers Union from 1992 to 2010 and was national president in 2000.

In a statement on Tuesday, Ms Palaszczuk offered her condolences to Mr Williams' family and acknowledged his efforts to as a "tireless advocate" for working-class families.

"Hughie often said everybody who has to go to work should do a good day's work and should get a good day's pay. Everyone should treat each other with respect," Ms Palaszczuk said.

"He dedicated his working life to that truth."
