Bortolo Mutti has been appointed as Palermo's new coach, replacing the fired Devis Mangia.

Mangia was sacked the day after Sunday's 2-0 derby loss at Catania, which left Palermo in 10th place in the Serie A standings after only one win from its last five games.

Mutti returns for a second spell at Palermo.

He led the Sicilian side during the 2001-02 season, steering Palermo to 10th place in Serie B but his contract was not renewed by club president Maurizio Zamparini.

Mutti's was in charge of Bari last season. But after taking over in February 2011, he was unable to prevent the side from finishing last in Serie A.

The 57-year-old has also coached Piacenza, Napoli, Reggina, Messina and Atalanta.

Mutti's appointment is the ninth coaching change in Serie A since August - and the second at Palermo.

Mangia took over at the club at the end of August, initially on a temporary basis, but a string of impressive results saw him sign a permanent deal on November 4.

Roberto Donadoni (Cagliari) and Stefano Pioli (Palermo) were sacked before the season began. The other firings were Gian Piero Gasperini (Inter Milan), Pierpaolo Bisoli (Bologna), Marco Giampaolo (Cesena), Sinisa Mihajlovic (Fiorentina), Massimo Ficcadenti (Cagliari) and Eusebio Di Francesco (Lecce).
