The Palestinians have joined the global arms watchdog's convention to halt the spread of chemical weapons.

"The State of Palestine deposited on 17 May 2018 its instrument of accession to the Chemical Weapons Convention," the Hague-based Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) said in a statement.

The multilateral treaty came into force in 1997 and has 192 signatories.

Australia signed the Convention in January 1993 and ratified it in May 1994.

The Convention prohibits the development and stockpiling of chemical weapons, the transfer of chemical weapons and the use of chemical weapons.

The OPCW says it has verified that over 96 per cent of all chemical weapon stockpiles declared by member states have been destroyed.

The UN body received the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize for its work in eliminating chemical weapons.
