Clive Palmer has claimed taxpayer-funded airfares for a Canberra court appearance months after his political career came to an end last year.

The businessman and former Fairfax MP claimed $1383.25 from the federal Department of Finance for fares relating to a two-day trip to Canberra on November 9 and 10.

Mr Palmer did not seek re-election to the House of Representatives at last year's federal election and had attended a High Court hearing relating to his collapsed company Queensland Nickel during the period of claim.

Department of Finance documents show Mr Palmer claimed $739.64 to travel from Brisbane to Canberra on November 9 and $643.61 to return to the Gold Coast the next day.

Former MPs are permitted to claim five return flights for government purposes within six months of officially leaving office.

Mr Palmer had at the time tweeted about his court appearance, where lawyers unsuccessfully tried to prevent liquidators questioning him about Queensland Nickel's collapse in early 2016, with creditors owed about $300 million and almost 800 refinery workers out of jobs.

He was subsequently grilled by liquidators during a series of hearings in the Federal Court in Brisbane in May.

However, it remains unclear if his November trip had an additional purpose. His media adviser has been contacted for comment.

Mr Palmer is currently overseas on holiday with his family.
