Clive Palmer has lost a bid to sue the liquidators of Queensland Nickel for not returning assets to his possession when the company collapsed, with a judge saying the proposed lawsuit would be a "startling affront to justice".

QN, which went into liquidation earlier this year, was in charge of the assets and property belonging to two other companies owned by Mr Palmer - QNI Metals and QNI Resources - as set out in a joint venture agreement.

Lawyers for Mr Palmer had argued in Brisbane Supreme Court that the joint venture agreement allowed QN to incur tens of millions of dollars in liabilities to fund the other companies without actually having assets of its own.

But Justice John Bond found on Thursday that accepting such a case would be "a startling affront to justice".

Justice Bond dismissed Mr Palmer's bid to sue FTI Consulting for not returning assets held in QN's name to his other companies when it was removed as general manager of the joint venture in March.
