Billionaire businessman and aspiring politician Clive Palmer is keeping his party's preferences and funding details close to his chest.

The leader of the Palmer United Party on Tuesday laughed off questions about how much of his personal fortune he is pouring into its federal election campaign.

"I'm tipping everything (in), the whole lot," he joked to reporters in Brisbane.

"You can have the lot, it doesn't matter. It's not about money, it's about ideas."

Mr Palmer said his party had attracted a thousand donors.

Pressed on his personal spending he said he'd have to check with his wife, before driving off in his Mercedes Benz convertible.

Mr Palmer earlier attended a business breakfast in the Queensland seat of Griffith to hear his party's candidate Karin Hunter speak at a forum also featuring sitting member Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

Asked to which party Palmer United would direct it's preferences, Mr Palmer said he would make an announcement after nominations closed.

Mr Palmer questioned the relevance of preferences, saying Opposition Leader Tony Abbott had backed about 87 per cent of the Gillard government's legislation in parliament since 2010.

"Really, is there much difference between the two parties?"
