They're two points away from the bottom of the ladder, but Penrith have bristled at the possibility of being handed the wooden spoon at the end of the NRL season.

The Panthers have spiralled down the competition table after falling to their fifth straight defeat last weekend, their longest losing streak of the year.

And now, less than 12 months after almost reaching the grand final, the struggling side is now in serious contention for some unwanted "silverware".
