Penrith have signed second-rower Frank Winterstein for the 2019 NRL season following his release by Manly.

The Panthers unveiled the 32-year-old as the 30th man on their full-time roster on Wednesday after he was spotted at Penrith training on Monday.

An Australian Rugby Sevens representative after leaving rugby league in 2013, Winterstein returned to the NRL at Manly in 2016 and impressed in their finals charge the following year.

However he struggled for game time last season.

"It was a bit of whirlwind last weekend with everything falling into place for me to join the Panthers," Winterstein said.

"I'm excited and grateful for the opportunity I've been given and look forward to working with the talented players and coaches.

"I've been in the professional sport environment for a long time and I know I can use that experience to help the young players here, on and off the field."

Winterstein won't play in Sunday's clash with Parramatta but could provide back-up early in the year with Viliame Kikau out injured until round four.
