Panthers continue to flirt with NRL danger

Penrith came roaring back from a 14-point deficit in the NRL for the second week in a row to beat Canberra.

Penrith coach Anthony Griffin insists there's enough time for his team to fix their defensive deficiencies before the NRL finals.

The Panthers on Sunday conjured another great escape from a 14-point deficit after storming back to beat Canberra 40-31 in a try-scoring shootout.

It came a week after also flirting with danger in a historic comeback against Manly.

While the wins keep them in the hunt for a top-four finish, their slow starts and defensive lapses have cast a shadow over their premiership credentials.

After watching his team enter halftime down 26-12, Griffin took solace from a second-half performance in which they limited the Raiders to just five points.

"The game goes for 80 minutes" Griffin said.

"I'd prefer to get it done a little bit better at the moment but we're getting it done and we're building. We know we've got to improve but we did a good job to get that done tonight.

"If we're getting behind and rolling over and having ugly losses, there'd be a lot more things to worry about."

The Panthers' left edge continues to be a cause for concern, with much of the Raiders attack zeroing in on veteran playmaker James Maloney.

The NSW State of Origin pivot missed 10 tackles but responded with a try, two try assists and three linebreak assists.

Second-row partner Viliame Kikau also missed five tackles but Maloney believes the team's defensive issues weren't limited to one flank.

"In general, there's a concern but we'll fix that," Maloney said.

"We were better this week than what we were last week. We'll be better again next week, we'll keep working on those things and we'll have it right in the next month.

The Panthers have a gruelling final month before the finals, including road trips to meet Gold Coast, the Warriors and Melbourne.

Maloney admitted he's only just beginning to recover from the recent Origin period, when he picked up a couple of niggling injuries that have hampered his recent form.

"I woke up and the body didn't hurt as much this week," Maloney said.

"I said to my missus I'm excited to play. I think that's a good sign. Hopefully a few niggles that have been bugging me are behind us."
