Lucas Papademos is to be the new prime minister of Greece, replacing George Papandreou, an official from the PASOK socialist party has told DPA.

Papademos is a former vice president of the European Central Bank, and had emerged as the favourite to lead the new coalition government.

SBS could not get an official confirmation of the report.
