The parents of a 14-year-old girl who was allegedly gang-raped in western Sydney are horrified about what happened to their daughter, police say.

The girl was walking home about 11pm (AEDT) on Saturday through Bill Colbourne Reserve in Doonside when she was approached by a man who allegedly forced her to the ground and sexually assaulted her.

It's believed five other men allegedly sexually assaulted her.

Acting police inspector Shane Connad says her parents are in shock.

"They're horrified as to what happened to their daughter," he told Fairfax Radio Network.

The men fled, leaving the girl to walk to a nearby home where police were called and she was taken to hospital.

The men are described as being of African appearance and aged in their late teens to early 20s.

Local detectives, with assistance from the State Crime Command's sex crimes squad, are investigating.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
