Paris new Test hope after ODI call-up

Joel Paris has emerged as Australia's new left-arm pace hope after being selected in the ODI squad for matches against India.

He's played just two first-class matches but Joel Paris has emerged as Australia's next great pace bowling hope.

The 23-year-old West Australian was on Monday included in Australia's 13-man squad for the first three ODIs against India starting in Perth on January 12.

With fellow left-armers Mitchell Johnson (retired) and Mitchell Starc (ankle surgery) out of action, Paris is every chance of making his international debut on his home deck - the WACA - next week after some impressive white-ball efforts this season.

But more than that, 191cm tall Paris is rated as the next Australian left-arm quick capable of making an impact at Test level by the national selectors.

Selector Trevor Hohns said on Monday Paris was on the fringe of Test selection as well as being in Australia's limited overs plans.

"We need to balance our attack for Test match cricket. He may need some more long form cricket but he is high on our agenda," Hohns said.

"He is coming along nicely. We find him exciting, particularly being a left-armer. Possibly not quite as quick as Starc and Johnson but he swings the ball and he is tall and gets good bounce. We would like to encourage him as much as we can."

Paris, who has claimed 14 wickets at 16.85 in his two Sheffield Shield games for WA, has been nominated as key to Australia's next generation of fast bowlers alongside Kane Richardson and Scott Boland who are also in the ODI squad to play India.

Shane Watson, Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon and Joe Burns were the big names left out of the squad, while veteran batsmen Shaun Marsh and George Bailey were included.

An Australian under-19 representative, Paris has battled injury over the last few seasons but impressed in the one-day domestic competition earlier this summer and has taken that form into the Big Bash League.

"I guess you don't really expect these things to happen. But if you perform well, and for me part of it was just making sure that I could string a few games together, they can," Paris said.

"I'm still so young, I still have so much of the game to learn. Every opportunity I get to learn a bit about the game and get the understanding is a positive."

Boland, 26, has been a part of the Australian squad for the second and Third Tests against West Indies, while Richardson, 24, has been considered an emerging limited overs candidate for several summers.

Boland and Paris are yet to represent Australia, while Richardson has played eight ODIs and two international Twenty20 fixtures.

Australia 13-man ODI squad: Steve Smith (capt), David Warner, George Bailey, Scott Boland, Josh Hazlewood, James Faulkner, Aaron Finch, Mitch Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Kane Richardson, Joel Paris, Matthew Wade.
