Honor, the spin-off smartphone brand from technology giant Huawei, will launch its latest device in Paris later today - complete with a dual-lens camera that it hopes can compete with the likes of Samsung and Apple.

The new Honor 8 has already been unveiled in the US, but the Chinese manufacturer is hoping to make a greater impact in Europe now Huawei is better established in the UK smartphone market.

Honor is targeting the mid-range of the market in terms of pricing, however the new phone comes with features some believe make it a rival to the big brands.

The 8 runs on Android and has a 5.2-inch full HD screen, while the dual-lens rear cameras are both 12 megapixels having been taken from the high-end Huawei P9 that was launched earlier this year. The phone also houses the USB-C connection that is becoming increasingly common in smartphones.

The phone has been made available for pre-order in the US at a price of $US400 ($A526), an amount that if matched at the European launch in Paris and given the comparable camera specifications of the 8 alongside Apple iPhone 6s and Samsung's Galaxy S7 - both of which cost in excess of $A1000 - could appeal to many smartphone users.

George Zhao, Honor's president, said at the US launch: "Honor 8 perfectly represents the evolution of our overall product view.

"It goes against established industry norms and market conventions with a higher aesthetic standard.

"At the same time, it balances looks with the smarts, speed, and connectivity that today's millennial consumers demand. Honor 8 reflects our understanding of and commitment to their needs and goals."
