Parker backs Walters as Qld coach

Queensland veteran Corey Parkers says he can understand why the QRL copped flak over their surprise choice to snub Kevin Walters for the Maroons job.

Even Corey Parker can understand why the Queensland Rugby League copped flak for overlooking Kevin Walters for the Maroons job.

But now that Paul Green has knocked back the State of Origin role, the veteran Queensland forward hopes the QRL make things right by appointing Walters.

"I think a lot of people assumed Kevvie would roll into the role," Parker told Sky Sports Radio.

"When he didn't, they had an opinion.

"It wasn't that Paul Green can't coach, clearly he can do that, it's just a lot of people assumed he (Walters) was next in line."

Walters - a 242-game veteran with the Broncos and a 20-time Queensland representative - was personally endorsed by outgoing coach Mal Meninga.

But the QRL raised eyebrows when they instead turned to NRL premiership-winning coach Green.

Queensland greats were critical of the QRL's move and Walters was believed to be shattered by the initial snub.

With Green opting to continue his coaching job at North Queensland in the NRL Parker was hopeful that Walters would now be seen as the logical choice.

"I would like to see Kevvie get it," the veteran Queensland forward said.

"He's been part of the system for a long period of time and he'll do a great job.

"He's got all the attributes of a good coach, particularly with Queensland - he's got the passion."

The QRL is expected to now appoint Walters but boss Peter Betros was tight lipped when asked whether it had begun talks with him on Monday.

"It's an ongoing process. We have not put a deadline on when we will make an announcement," he told AAP.

"I am not going to speculate on candidates."
