Parker moves closer to Rio boxing

Perth boxer Caitlin Parker has beaten Kaye Scott in the women's 75kg division to move a step closer to the Rio Olympics qualification.

Perth boxer Caitlin Parker has moved a step closer to the Rio Olympics after the teenager beat Commonwealth Games representative Kaye Scott in the women's 75kg division in Adelaide.

The win means Parker will represent Australia at the Asia-Oceania Olympic qualifiers next month, as well as the women's World Championships in Kazakhstan in May.

Parker, 19, beat the more experienced Scott in the finals of the Australian Nationals in November, but had to wait until this weekend to secure the 75kg spot under the best-of-three format.

"I felt really sharp, everything I'd been working on went to plan," said Parker after Saturday night's bout.

"Getting it finally over and done with is very relieving. Obviously I did feel confident but there's always that thought about not wanting anything to go wrong, about wanting everything to go as I planned."

Parker knows most of her opponents between now and Rio will have a lot more experience, but the Youth Olympic Games bronze medallist is ready for the challenge.

"It doesn't matter what age I am," Parker said.

"I've been to three World Championships, and medalled at two of them. I'm ready for it."

Parker's next challenge will come on Friday when she fights alongside several of her teammates at a Trans-Tasman challenge in Auckland.
