Parker to defend boxing title in NZ

Kiwi boxing world champion Joseph Parker will get the first chance to defend his WBO title in Auckland.

New Zealand's WBO heavyweight champion Joseph Parker will make his first title defence in Auckland.

WBO president Paco Valcarcel has announced the 25-year-old Kiwi will fight Briton Hughie Fury in Auckland on April 1.

In a tweet, he said Parker's promoters, Duco Events, had won the purse bid with a $US3 million ($A3.9 million) offer, with a 60-40 purse split in favour of Parker.

The announcement of the bid results was delayed earlier in the week.

Parker, 25, beat previously unbeaten Mexican Andy Ruiz by majority decision in a fight for the vacant belt in Auckland in December to take his record to 22 wins, 18 by knockout.

Fury, 22, is the cousin of outspoken former WBA, IBF and WBO champion Tyson Fury and has won all 20 of his fights, with half of them by knockout. He is ranked No.2 by the WBO.
