Parliament stops to remember Yunupingu

Malcolm Turnbull has described the late Yolngu singer Dr G Yunupingu as one of the most important figures in Australia's music history.

The federal parliament has paused to mark the death of prominent indigenous musician Dr G Yunupingu.

Malcolm Turnbull described the late, blind Yolngu singer as one of the important figures in Australia's music history, with a startlingly beautiful voice that weaved its way into the hearts and souls of millions.

"So many have been touched by his voice and his music," the prime minister told MPs on Tuesday.

"But his mark on this country extends beyond the beauty of his music."

Mr Turnbull said Dr G Yunupingu, who died last month aged 46 while undergoing dialysis treatment, had opened hearts and minds to the beauty and significance of the languages of first Australians.

So too did he help illustrate the spiritual connection indigenous Australians shared with their ancestors through music, language and culture, he said.
