A joint parliamentary committee will look into claims of unethical practices in the life insurance industry.

A parliamentary committee will investigate the life insurance industry and whether reform is needed.

The inquiry, proposed by Nationals senator John Williams and backed by the Senate on Wednesday, will look at whether companies are engaging in unethical practices to avoid meeting claims.

The joint committee on corporations and financial services will report back by June 30, 2017.
