A federal parliamentary committee has tabled a long-awaited report on the Racial Discrimination Act.
The Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights has been examining submissions on the legislation, including proposals to amend section 18C, which makes it illegal to offend, insult and humiliate a person on racial grounds.
Its findings are likely to reignite political debate on the issue, with Labor and the Greens opposed to any weakening of the current legislation,and deep divisions within the ruling coalition.
