Muslim communities in Australia have historically been pro-Labor, but there appears to be a growing shift.
How these communities vote could be crucial to the outcome in key marginal seats.
Multi-Cultural Affairs Minister Kate Lundy is fighting to retain the seat of Fowler, which was once considered safe for Labor.
This week she visited a mosque in Bonnyrigg, in outer western Sydney, to announce a $130,000 grant to the local Turkish Islamic Association.
"We never take any political allegiance, from any group, for granted," she said.
"We have to work for that loyalty.
In the seat of Auburn, where up to 40 per cent of the population is Muslim, many traditional Labor voters were reconsidering their allegiance.
Muhammad Eris, of the Turkish Islamic association, was one of them.
"If you asked me that question 15 years ago, I would say Labor, 10 years ago Labor, five years ago…But now, I think those days are gone," he said.
