New Zealand has tasted success in the pool at the Rio Paralympics, with Mary Fisher setting a world record to earn gold in the women's 100m backstroke S11.

Fisher's time of 1min17.96sec confined China's Liwen Cai and Sweden's Maja Reichard to second and third.

Earlier, swimmer Sophie Pascoe scored New Zealand's 200th Paralympic medal in winning silver in the women's 50m freestyle S10.

Pascoe's personal best of 27.72 seconds was .45sec behind Canadian Aurelie Rivard, who set a world record on 27.27sec. China's Yi Chen finished third.

Pascoe, 23, won silver in the same event in London, part of her haul of three golds and three silvers.

In the field events, Rory McSweeney, 31, won bronze in the men's javelin F44m, with his fourth throw measuring 54.99m.

The gold was won by Trinidad and Tobago's Akeem Stewart, who threw a world record 57.32m, and silver by Canada's Alister McQueen.

New Zealand now has five medals at Rio, two golds, one silver and two bronzes.
