Passengers unite against racist train rant

Commuters have leapt to the defence of fellow passengers on board a Melbourne train in an attempt to stop a racially motivated verbal attack.

Video footage has emerged of a woman unleashing a tirade of abuse against nearby passengers and shoving one man who spoke up to stop her.

The incident occurred on the Craigieburn train line on Wednesday night, according to a Herald Sun report.

“It's my f***ing country,” she can be heard saying to nearby passengers.

The target of the attack was a tall man of African appearance, Ninemsn reports.

“My grandfather was a sergeant in the Second World War, my family fought to keep this country free you f***”

“This is what us… original Aussies fought for, to keep you black ****ers out.”

The outburst was met with derision and disgust from other passengers.

“You're on CCTV,” one passenger tells the woman.

“This is not the Australia that she represents,” another says. “We've had enough of this.”

Several voices can be heard telling the woman to “shut up”.

Melbourne Police have praised the passengers who defended the man, but asked for caution, saying it was better for commuters to call police if they felt threatened.

Senior Sergeant Dearne Dummett says two police officers boarded the train at North Melbourne station.

"They spoke to the female, her behaviour was quite erratic, they made the assessment that for the safety of the people on the train, they needed to remove those people immediately."

"We encourage anyone to assess a situation and if you feel threatened, call the police immediately."

The Australian Human Rights Commission says it has received an increasingly high number of complaints of racial abuse.

The latest incident comes after a string of racial attacks on commuters in recent months.

Earlier this month, bystanders captured video of an Australian man swearing at two people of Asian appearance on board a Sydney bus, while in February, ABC presenter Jeremy Fernandez spoke of being on the receiving end of a hate-filled rant also on a bus in Sydney.
