A man who wears a colander on his head and is a member of the 'Pastafarian' religion was told by Victorian road authorities to take it off for his licence photo.
YouTube videos show Benjamin Ady in Carlton on Wednesday arguing with VicRoads staff, who were asking him to remove his unusual choice of spaghetti straining headwear.
He is part of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, a movement that promotes a light-hearted view of religion and opposes the teaching of creationism in public schools.
In the video Ady tells VicRoads counter staff that as per the rules on the VicRoads website religious headwear is allowed in licence photos.
A worker tells him that colanders are not considered part of that definition.
"They'd never get away with this with a Muslim because they know it would cause outrage," Mr Ady says in the video uploaded on Thursday.
"They are a bit in the dark ages when it comes to religion and so I guess we need to educate them in the beautiful religion of Pastafarianism."
VicRoads staff eventually agreed to take the photo but told him his licence renewal might be rejected.
VicRoads has been contacted for comment.
