A Test return remains Pat Cummins' ultimate goal but the 23 year-old is quite prepared to play the shortened forms of the game as he makes his way back to full match fitness.
The injury-prone quick was on Tuesday included in a 26-man squad for an the upcoming Australia A series against South Africa A in Queensland.
"I'd certainly like to get back doing everything," Cummins said on Tuesday.
"Hopefully get back to ODIs and use that as a position to try and get back to Test cricket.
"But I think initially it's certainly white ball, makes a bit more sense."
Cummins learned long ago to relish every small step in his multiple comebacks from the serious setbacks that have followed a sparkling Test debut at age 18.
He hasn't played since suffering a stress fracture in his back last September.
"It was a fairly frustrating summer," he admitted.
"I've been back bowling but it's been really low intensity, just a couple of steps.
"By the time Australia A comes along, I'll be well and truly ready to go."
Cummins planned on rejigging his action following a series of back, foot and side injuries.
"A few minor changes but nothing too drastic," the NSW quick said in Sydney.
"When I am trying to bowl really, really fast, I tend to get a big twist in my upper body.
"Hopefully I get it right and I shouldn't lose any pace."
Townsville, Mackay and Brisbane will host a series of four-day and one-day games this winter.
The action will feature Australia A, South Africa A, Cricket Australia's national performance squad and a fourth international side yet to be confirmed.
Cummins, left-arm spinner Ashton Agar, allrounders Moises Henriques and Marcus Stoinis and pacemen Scott Boland, Kane Richardson and Joel Paris headline a 24-man squad stacked with experience.
"We will be guided by medical staff on his return," chairman of selectors Rod Marsh said of Cummins.
Boland, Richardson, Paris, Joe Mennie, Dan Worrell, Chadd Sayers and Chris Tremain are the other pacemen looking to make a big impression.
"It is important that we continue to build our arsenal of quality fast bowlers," Marsh said.
Cameron Bancroft, Cameron Boyce, Travis Head and Chris Lynn, who have all played Twenty20 cricket for Australia, will aim to boost their hopes of a recall.
South Australia batsman Jake Lehmann, son of Australia coach Darren, is among the young batsmen included in the squad.
Troy Cooley will coach Australia A in the series.
