Centuries to Ashes squad aspirant Kurtis Patterson and former Test wicketkeeper Peter Nevill have put New South Wales in a commanding position after day three of their Sheffield Shield match against Western Australia at Bankstown Oval.

Western Australia were 1-13 at the close of play, trailing NSW by 185 runs.

The home side posted a massive first-innings lead of 198 after declaring on 8-477.

The in-form Patterson led the way with a commanding 134 from a 229-ball innings, which included 15 fours and two sixes.

It followed Patterson's recent Test century against Sri Lanka in just his second outing in the baggy green.

After resuming on 57, Patterson, along with Jason Sangha (36), continued cautiously during a morning session which produced only 59 runs.

The second-placed Blues picked up momentum as the day wore on, highlighted by a stylish 101 not out from Nevill.

It was a 10th first class century for the Blues wicketkeeper, who faced 177 balls, hitting eights fours and one six.

Spinner Steve O'Keefe helped set up the declaration with a hard-hitting 57 off 87 balls, including three sixes.

A five-wicket haul for leg-spinner Liam O'Connor (5-131) on debut proved to be a rare highlight for the inexperienced WA bowling attack.

Cameron Bancroft, who scored an unbeaten century in the first innings, will resume his innings on Tuesday on 6, alongside Josh Inglis who is on 5.
